(October 30, 2015) — There are some big football games across the area tonight, even with Stephenville idle.

Rain and wet fields will be a factor throughout the evening, but it’s not often you look back at a game in retrospect and truly believe it was determined by weather conditions.

Regardless what the skies bring our way, Dublin, Hico and Santo are all in district championship games tonight, while FAITH’s battle with Austin NYOS has been canceled. FAITH has two weeks before entering the state playoffs.

Here’s a look at tonight’s lineup:

Santo at Albany* – MOVED – 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Breckenridge

Jarrell at Dublin, 7:30 p.m.

Goldthwaite at Hico, 7:30 p.m.

What you need to know:

Dublin could win a district title:

Yep, the Lions could end a 21 year drought and win the 10-3A Division II championship, but the road ahead is not easy. Jarrell is undefeated and is led by a Division I recruit (as an athlete) at quarterback named Tony Brown. Dublin’s biggest strength defensively is it’s guys up front, and Cade Hill, Conner Moore and company better start with containing Brown to keep the Lions in the title chase.

The Lions are playoff bound any way:

Dublin will be in the playoffs in back to back seasons for the first time since 1963 and ’64. The Lions secured that with a win over Rogers last week, giving them the head’s up tie-breaker and a two-game lead over Rogers and Bruceville-Eddy. The top four will be Jarrell, Clifton, Dublin or Marlin. The order is being sorted out tonight and next week.

Hico never went away:

Someone this week said Hico is back… no, the Tigers never went away. They just played a brutal non-district schedule and battled injuries. But as Keith Wood coached teams always do, they are rounding into solid form at the right time and have run their district win streak to 13.

District championship:

Sure there are possibilities of splits, but forget all that. Neither Hico or Goldthwaite are losing next week. This game, tonight at Tiger Stadium, is for all the marbles in 7-2A Division I, where Hico is defending last year’s outright title.

Santo is better than you think:

Probably not good enough to knock off Albany, but if weather slows the passing game to star receiver Alex Faith, that could be just the equalizer this Santo team needs. The Wildcats have one of the best rushing attacks around, but be forewarned, the Albany defense that has allowed just six points the last three weeks is no pretender. It is fast, physical and expects to lead the Lions back to the state finals. All that said, if Albany isn’t in peak form tonight, Santo is just the type of solid team that could get a lead then melt some clock. The winner will be the district champ in 8-2A Division II.

*-Note: At 6:30 we have learned this game has been moved to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Breckenridge
