The yell is officially back on the Ranger College campus – as well as the cheering and chanting.
Ranger College officially reinstated its cheerleading program earlier this week when more than a dozen students were named to the new RC cheerleading squad. Overall, 14 women were chosen to be part of the college’s first cheer squad in almost a decade.
“This is something the students said they wanted,” said Ranger College Assistant to the President Stan Feaster. “With that, we decided it was time to bring this back.”
Almost 20 young women took part in a special try-out session on Nov. 3. During the tryout, each cheer squad candidate performed a chant and cheer in front of five judges in the Ron Butler Gymnasium. Among the judges were RC cheerleading sponsors Amanda Nelson, Sarah Orsini and Becky Jeffires.
“It’s pretty exciting,” said Shelby Meredith, a RC Choir student who was one of 14 cheer squad members selected. “My mother (Deana) was a cheerleader in college (at Cisco Junior College) and she was always trying to talk me into getting into cheerleading. She was pretty excited when I told her.”
The newly reformed Ranger College cheerleading squad will perform at the men’s and women’s basketball games during the 2015-16 season. The squad’s first performance will be on Nov. 10 at the RC women’s home game with Mountain View College.
