Stephenville playoff run ends in ‘Sweet 16’

SNYDER (November 13, 2015) — Stephenville fought off elimination once but couldn’t do it twice in a four-set loss to the No. 1 4A team in Texas Friday afternoon.

Bushland had overcame narrow margins to win the first two and led throughout the fourth after Stephenville dominated the third in a Region I-4A semifinal at The Coliseum Friday afternoon.

Bushland, a winner by scores of 25-19, 25-19, 16-25, 16-25, advances to face two-time reigning state champ Decatur in the regional final at 2 p.m. Saturday. Decatur outlasted Monahans in five sets earlier Friday.

Stephenville held leads of 5-2 in the first and 16-11 in the second, but Bushland answered each time. A 6-0 run gave Bushland a 12-7 first set lead, and a 14-3 finishing surge lifted the No. 1 Falcons to victory in the second.

The third was never close, with Stephenville leading the whole way, before it was Bushland preserving a narrow lead early and pulling away late n the fourth.

Stephenville middle Kourtney Seaton, a Northwestern State (La.) signee, had 13 kills, Kaleigh Conger added eight and Kerstin Fredrickson five. Chelsea Gillespie had 12 assists and Taylor Garber 11. Mikayla Hobbs tallied 14 kills, Kylee Ponder 11 and Conger 10.

Stephenville finishes the season as outright district champs, four-time reigning area champs and members of the “Sweet 16” for the second time in four seasons.
