(November 22, 2015) — Arch-rivals Huckabay and Lingleville met earlier than normal this year, with JW Weiss pouring in 26 points including 18 on 3 pointers to lead the Indians past the Cardinals, 56-47, in the championship of the Graford tournament Saturday evening.

Weiss hit four 3-pointers in the third quarter, when Huckabay scored 20 points and stretched its advantage to 42-26 entering the fourth. That’s when free throws put it away for the Indians, who were 12-14 from the stripe – all in the fourth – including 6-8 by Weiss.

Lingleville outscored Huckabay 21-14 in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough for the Cardinals, who were led by Tim Griffin and Colbe Stoker with 12 points each. It was the first loss suffered by the Cardinals, who now join Huckabay with records of 3-1.

Huckabay also had two double-digit scorers, with Gage Dowell adding 12 to the big game by Weiss. Austin Wells scored nine, Eduardo Sanchez four, Taylor Lopez three and Matthew Haley two.

For Lingleville, Jarod Hagood and Tom Van Kranenburg each netted seven, Devon Corpus five, Sergio Rangel two and Bret Cogburn two.

Huckabay reached the championship by avenging a prior loss to Graford. The Indians visited Graford earlier in the week and lost, but trumped the state power Rabbits 66-52 in the tournament semifinals Friday, when Weiss hit five 3-pointers and scored 15.

The Indians survived a tough test from the Peaster JV in the opening round, winning 53-49.

Lingelvill reached the championship game by beating Olney 67-53 in the semifinals and thrashing Saint Jo 85-25 in the opener.
