Diaz wins saddle bronc, local athletes top half million in NFR earnings

STEPHENVILLE (December 9, 2015) — Isaac Diaz took center stage from the local delegation to the National Finals Rodeo Tuesday evening, winning the sixth go-round saddle bronc riding.

Diaz and the rest of the saddle bronc field spent the first half of the NFR in the shadow of Stephenville product Jacobs Crawley, but the Desdemona cowboy busted out a ride worth 83 points and $26,230.77 to improve to fifth in the world with $159,681.51 for the year. He is fifth in the average, just a half point out of fourth with four rounds remaining.

Round seven Wednesday will be televised by CBS Sports beginning at 9 p.m. (CST).

Bobby Mote racked up $20,730.77 for scoring 83.5 points on Growney Brothers Rodeo’s Wild N Blue in the Tuesday bareback riding. The four-time world champ topped $40,000 in his 15th trip to the finals and bumped up to seventh in the world with $134,447.23 in season earnings.

In the team roping, it was Jake Cooper’s turn to break through. The Stephenville header and partner Russell Cardoza stopped the clock in 4.2 seconds, fast enough for fourth place and $11,000. Stephenville heeler Jake Long and Huckabay heeler Paul Eaves split fifth and sixth in 4.3 for $5,500 each.

Crawley covered but scored just 74 points to dip to second in the saddle bronc average, half a point behind Wade Sundell. Those two and rookie CoBurn Bradshaw are the only cowboys to cover all six broncs. Crawley still leads the world standings with $193,323.59, but only by a little more than $3,400.

The 18 local cowboys combined to earn $68,961.54 Tuesday and have pocketed $546,891.64 through six rounds.
