GLEN ROSE (December 10, 2015) — Four fourth-quarter 3-pointers carried Lorena past Stephenville, 53-45, in pool play at the Glen Rose Lions Club Invitational Tournament Thursday evening.

It was the second loss of the day for Stephenville (5-8), which fell earlier to Midlothian Heritage, 60-54. The Yellow Jackets face Maypearl at 8 a.m. Friday.

Stephenville erased a nine-point halftime deficit by surrendering only one field goal in the third period. The Yellow Jackets scored the first eight points of the quarter, including a 3-pointer by Easton Jones and a 2-and-1 by Josh Nowell.

A pair of Vanden Berge free throws gave Stephenville a 33-31 lead entering the fourth quarter, but it didn’t last long. Trailing by four, Lorena hit back-to-back 3-pointers from the top of the arc for a 39-37 advantage. The game was tied twice more, but Stephenville never led again.

Lorena hit two more free throws to stretch the advantage, and ultimately knocked down three of four free throws on late flagrant and technical fouls to put it out of reach.

Stephenville was led by Nowell with 11, while Darian Brown and Vanden Berge added eight each. Zoey Kendall scored seven, Jones six, Rett Dittfurth two and Evan Moody one.

Lorena used an 8-0 run late in the second quarter to lead by as many as 10 before a Stephenville free throw made it 28-19 at intermission. The Leopards were on top 16-13 after one, building some early breathing room before Stephenville Jones buried a long 3-pointer at the buzzer.

In the earlier game, Stephenville saw a 13-point third-quarter lead slip away. The Jackets were still ahead 45-38 at the end of the third, but Heritage outscored them 22-9 in the fourth.

Vanden Berge led Stephenville with 19 points, while Nowell netted 12, Kendall 11, Brown seven and Mason Holstein five.
