LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior catcher Tyler Floyd has been recognized as the highest-ranking graduate in the exercise and sports sciences program, university officials announced Friday as part of commencement ceremonies.

Floyd, a native of Stephenville, Texas, is one of four students from the College of Arts and Sciences honored as a high-ranking fall graduate as he completed his undergraduate studies with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.

“Our staff couldn’t be prouder of Tyler’s work in the classroom,” Texas Tech head coach Tim Tadlock said. “He has always made academics a high priority which is evident by his 4.0 GPA. We are happy for Tyler and his family on this great accomplishment.”

Floyd has been a regular on the President’s List throughout his career after transferring to Texas Tech from McLennan Community College in the fall of 2014. Floyd was honored late in the 2015 season on the Academic All-Big 12 first team where he was the only conference baseball student-athlete nominated with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

On the diamond, Floyd has appeared in 78 games over the last two seasons, making 64 starts behind the plate. He hit .221 as a junior last season while recording a pair of home runs and nine RBI. Floyd also drew 22 walks to finish with a .359 on-base percentage.

Floyd is one of 27 Texas Tech student-athletes who will receive their diplomas this weekend. Marsha Sharp, former Texas Tech women’s basketball coach and current associate athletics director for special projects, will be the commencement speaker at each undergraduate commencement ceremony this weekend.
