STEPHENVILLE (December 13, 2015) — Jacobs Crawley and Kollin VonAhn won world championships and joined Luke Brown as average champions as local athletes ran their combined winnings to almost $1.5 million after the final round and average checks at the National Finals Rodeo Saturday.

Crawley cruised to his first world championship and second average title in his fifth consecutive and career finals appearance at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The Stephenville product covered all 10 broncs, placed in eight of 10 rounds, and earned $168,384.61 at the finals. That pushed his season earnings to $276,246.66, just $3,182.16 more than Wade Sundell, who made a late surge by winning the final go-round.

VonAhn, who resides in Huckabay, partnered with Stephenville header Luke Brown to win the average with 65.3 seconds on 10 head. The large average check – more than $67,000 – meant Brown and VonAhn each made $152,576.93 at the finals.

VonAhn made $231,600.93 in season earnings, edging Ryan Motes of Weatherford by $5,060.43. It’s the second world championship for VonAhn, the other coming in 2009.

Brown, however, wasn’t as fortunate, finishing second for the third time in his career. He earned $224,986.57, just $2,703.39 less than world champ Aaron Tsinigine.

Morgan Mill heeler Jake Long finished third in the average and sixth in the world, Long and heading partner Coleman Proctor were the only team besides Brown and VonAhn to rope all 10 head. Proctor and Long made the money in four rounds, and even when everything appeared to head south in the ninth go-round, they were patient, accepted penalties and stayed alive in the average despite a time of 44.1 seconds.

Staying in the average meant second place at the rodeo and an average check of $54,576.92 for Long and Proctor, lifting them to $110,211.54 each at the finals. Proctor made $190,34.08 in season earnings and finished fifth in heading, while Long ended the year with $188,555.32 in earnings.

In heeling, Kory Koontz of Stephenville finished seventh in the world, Jade Corkill of Huckabay eighth, Travis Graves of Stephenville 10th, Paul Eaves of Huckabay 12th and Travis Woodard of Stephenville 14th. In heading, Clay Tryan of Lipan finished eighth, Chad Masters of Lipan 10th and Jake Cooper of Stephenville 12th.

In his second NFR, Marty Yates, the youngest of the local delegation at 21, finished sixth in the average and sixth in the world in tie-down wrapping. Yates placed in four rounds and made $87,000 at the NFR and $186,280.84 for the year.

Sterling Smith of Stephenville  also placed in four rounds in the tie-down roping, to finish seventh in the average and ninth in the world. He made $152,738.86 for the season including $73,673.08.

Isaac Diaz of Desdemona finished sixth in the world saddle bronc standings with $226,527.66, including $122,961.54 at the NFR, where he was fourth in the average.

All 18 local cowboys made money in at least one round at the NFR. With the $10,000 qualifiers’ bonus, the least any of the area athletes made was still above $20,000.

The Stephenville Chamber of Commerce and Cowboy Capital of the World Pro Rodeo Committee are hosting a welcome home celebration for the athletes on Monday, December 21, from 6:30-8 p.m. at Cowboy Church of Erath County.
