Fourth quarter run, 24 from Smith carry Bees to win

(January 15, 2016) — Stephenville scored 10 straight points to break a fourth quarter tie and won 60-51 at Mineral Wells in 6-4A district play Friday evening.

Mikayla Hobbs hot the second of two foul shots for a 45-44 lead, then Bayleigh Chaviers turned a pair of takeaways into fast break Layups before a 3-pointer by Kali Smith made it 52-44.

Payton Wall finished the run from the foul line, and the Honeybees cruised the final two minutes to the win, their second straight to begin district play. They host Abilene Wylie at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesay.

The 3-pointer during the decisive rally was the seventh for Smith, who poured in 24 points. Fellow senior guard Bayleigh Smith used takeaways with pressure defense to fuel her 15 points including 10 in the fourth quarter when she was 6-7 from the foul stripe.

Skylar Chipman added nine points for the Bees, while Wall and Jaycee Morton each had four, Hobbs two, Ali Thorpe one and Kaitlyn Pierce one.
