STEPHENVILLE (January 27, 2016) — Listeners of the leading NPR radio station in The Cross Timbers region, KTRL 90.5, have a new source for expansive coverage of state, national and international news — from a distinctly Texas perspective — with the launch of “Texas Standard,” the national daily news show of Texas, making its debut at 3p.m., on February 1, 2016.

The one-hour daily news magazine is a project of KUT Austin, KERA North Texas, Houston Public Media, and San Antonio’s Texas Public Radio.

This cross-station collaboration — the first of its kind among public radio stations in Texas— provides a platform to connect Texans to stories from communities across their state in the same way NPR’s “Morning Edition” connects listeners to stories from communities across the U.S. and around the globe.

KTRL 90.5’s General Manager John Kirby said, “We can’t wait for Texas Standard to start airing on KTRL. It’s going to really appeal to a lot of our listeners in the Cross Timbers area because this news has a Texas perspective on everything, from state to international news. They have feature stories on sports and music and even one called Texas Politifact that covers all the latest in Texas politics.”

Hosted by award-winning journalist David Brown, “Texas Standard” explores the world of news, economics, innovation and culture, everyday — from a Texas perspective — in a fresh, contemporary, conversational style.

“When we listen to the news, many of us feel like it’s shaped by a New York or Washington, D.C. perspective,” said Brown. “’Texas Standard’” is the first daily public radio news magazine to prioritize local, national and international stories in a manner that’s consistent with the way we Texans see the world.

“Our intent is to be fresh, original and groundbreaking,” continued Brown. “We believe that reporting marked by wit, humor and informality can uplift and underscore our shared humanity, while helping us understand the world around us.”

Prior to his work with “Texas Standard,” Brown founded and hosted the award-winning cultural journalism unit “Texas Music Matters,” produced by KUT Public Radio. He is known nationally for his work as host of public radio’s “Marketplace.”

The daily jazz and music shows are changing their programming times and days as well due to the addition of “Texas Standard” on KTRL. The shows will now begin at 1p.m. each weekday.

About KTRL 90.5

KTRL 90.5 programs the best in NPR News, classical and jazz music in Cross Timbers and is partnered with KAMU-FM, Texas A&M’s public radio station in College Station. This allows KTRL to serve a large number of people in the Cross Timbers that do not have access to the quality programming from National Public Radio (NPR) that many people rely on for news and information.

Located at Tarleton State University, KTRL 90.5 FM has a staff consisting mostly of students at the University whom you will occasionally hear on air along with the regular programming. KTRL 90.5 covers a 10-county area of the Cross Timbers from our transmitter located between Stephenville and Granbury, with our strongest signal available in Stephenville, Granbury, Glen Rose, Hico and Dublin, covering about 100,000 people in this core 3-county area, with nearly 1.5 million people in our extended full coverage area.
