STEPHENVILLE (February 1, 2016) — No. 10 Tarleton State showed off its prowess from the plate on opening day of the 2016 college softball season, sweeping Texas A&M-International, 11-3 and 10-3, in a doubleheader at Tarleton Softball Complex.
It’s the third straight 2-0 start by the TexAnns, who amassed the 21 runs on 26 hits in the twin bill. They have a chance to start 3-0 for the first time since 2011 when they face East Central Thursday to begin the weekend-long NCAA Division II Softball Classic at St. Mary’s in San Antonio.
Tarleton hit three home runs in the opener, including a 3-run bomb by Nyka Wood to invoke the eight-run mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth. The TexAnns then turned to small ball with a pair of triples, a double and 10 singles in the game-two rout.
Melody Mayse was 3-for-4 with a triple two RBI and three runs scored in game one before finishing her big opening day by going 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and a run in the nightcap. First baseman Rebekah Allen was 3-for-3 with an RBI in the second game after going 2-for-3 with an RBI in the opener.
Stephenville native and right fielder Katelyn Conlee and shortstop Delaney Wayland each hit solo home runs in the first game. Alyssa Ringhausen unloaded a pinch-hit three-run double in the second game.
Sophomore Haley Freyman won game one and junior Shelby Hedrick earned the game-two decision in the circle for the TexAnns. Freyman surrendered three runs – two earned – on five hits with a pair of walks and two strikeouts in a complete-game effort. Hedrick also went the distance, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks while sitting two batters down on strikes.
