LAWTON, Okla. (February 6, 2016) — Tarleton struggled all day offensively and Cameron dominated the backboards to beat the Texans, 73-57, at Aggie Gym Saturday afternoon.
It’s the first victory for Cameron head coach Nate Gamet over Tarleton after five consecutive losses. The Aggies may have been overdue for a home win over the Texans after losing by less than three points at home to Tarleton each of the last two years.
Tarleton has dropped two straight on the road by a combined 33 points. Its their worst two losses anywhere since 2010.
Deondray Ray and Jamaal Branelty were the stars for Cameron. Ray was 8-10 from the floor including 3-4 from outside the arc on his way to 20 points and Brantley scored 19 to go with seven boards. The Aggies were balanced with freshman point guard JV Long tallying 13 points, six assists, five boards and two steals over 37 minutes, and Cameron Lee adding 10 points and five boards.
Tarleton did not have a player with more than five boards, as the Texans were bat on the glass, 38-25, their worst margin of the season. Tarleton had just 10 turnovers, losing for the first time this season when giving away the ball less than 15 times.
Tarleton couldn’t get going offensively, shooting just 35 percent against tough man-to-man defense. The Texans’ biggest success came when Hardge attacked the basket, knocking down runners or getting to the foul line, where both teams were outstanding.
Tarleton was 13-16 at the line, Cameron an even better 16-18.
Hardge scored 15 but was the only viable offensive threat much of the afternoon for Tarleton, which was shooting 30 percent until midway point of the second half. Xavier Smith and Charles Hill each scored eight, but were a combined 4-13 from the floor.
Tarleton star EJ Reed simply couldn’t get looks against the Aggie defense, attempting just four shots. He made three, scoring seven points to go with five boards before fouling out. Malcolm Hamilton also scored seven.
Tarleton had a season-low five assists and were just 6-19 from the arc.
The Texans visit Angelo State in another key LSC game at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Cameron hosts Eastern New Mexico at the same time.
