HOUSTON – Welcome to Tarleton State, Jake Hasbrouck.

The redshirt sophomore from Ault, Colorado has made his first impression as a hulking power hitter with two home runs and five RBIs in his first six games, including a Major League-sized, opposite field home run against No. 6 St. Cloud State Saturday night at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

But it was a single into left field that made Hasbrouck a hero Sunday afternoon as the Rocky Mountain Slugger’s RBI single plated Hunter Seales from second to deliver a 1-0 win for Tarleton over No. 16 Henderson State to wrap up the Winter Invitational.

Hasbrouck’s extra-inning base hit capped off arguably the best pitching performance of the last two seasons for the Texans, which was delivered by Trevor Renfro and Callaway Kirkpatrick.

Renfro, who took a tough-luck no decision, tossed six stellar innings allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out a career-high 12 batters. It was the seventh time in school history a Texan pitcher has struck out 12 in a game and the first time since Matt Buckmaster struck out a dozen against Incarnate Word on May 3, 2013.

After six innings of work, Renfro gave way to Kirkpatrick out of the pen and the lefty from Aledo was brilliant.

With the exception of a one-out single and walk in the eighth inning, Kirkpatrick set the Reddies down in order in each of the other three innings to give the Texan offense a chance.

The chance came to fruition in the bottom of the 10th when Seales drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a strikeout put the game one out away from another inning, Hasbrouck came to the rescue and sent the Texans home happy.

As a team, Tarleton managed five hits – one each from Elijah Christenson, Dalton Richardson,Landon Merka, Landon Thompson, and Hasbrouck.

Tarleton will stay on the road next weekend with a three-game series in San Antonio against No. 12 St. Mary’s.
