STEPHENVILLE (February 12, 2016) — When Brownwood hit a 3-pointer to cut the Stephenville lead to three in the opening seconds of the second half Friday evening, it appeared a dog fight was about to break out at Gandy Gym.
But Stephenville had other plans.
Playoff plans.
Easton Jones hit a pair of 3-pointers of his own during a 12-0 run that followed, and Stephenville suddenly led by 15 on its way to a 57-42 victory that secured the final playoff spot from District 6-4A.
The Yellow Jackets advance to face the 5-4A champ in the bi-district round of the Region I-4A playoffs. They are currently tied and will determine their district title next Tuesday.
It was a game full of runs for Stephenville – a 12-4 push to lead 14-8 after the first, the big third quarter run and a 8-0 fourth-quarter surge to open up a 52-31 lead. The Yellow Jackets called the dogs off after that last run, which included buckets in transition by Zoey Kendall and Mason Holstein that put it away.
Darian Brown peppered 11 points to lead a balanced effort that saw seven Stephenville players net at least five. Jones scored 10 and Cameron Frazier seven while Kendall, Evan Moody and Josh Nowell each added five. Coby Vandenberg chipped in four points, Rett Dittfurth two and Mason Yoes one.
Here is what Stephenville head coach Bill Brooks had to say following the win:
