STEPHENVILLE (February 24, 2016) — Aaron Veloz stole the show for the bulk of an exciting second half Wednesday and led undefeated Stephenville (10-0-2, 1-0) to a 3-2 win in a district opener against Mineral Wells.
After applying pressure to no avail in the first half at Lem Brock Field, Veloz and the Yellow Jackets finally broke through when he used bicycle kick to cross to Tino Rocha, who finished it off for the first goal shortly after intermission.
The junior striker queued up the highlight reel again moments later with a shuffle-foot move and goal, and went on to make it 3-0 when he knocked in a rebound in the 57th minute.
The Veloz-driven flurry lasted 13 minutes, and Stephenville needed every bit of it to survive the final 27.
Mineral wells went low and left on a breakaway to score when keeper Noble Alexander was left alone in the back. He found himself alone in the face of pressure again with just under 11 minutes remaining, going low as the Ram striker put one over him and into the net.
But Stephenville regathered and played the final 10 minutes without facing pressure, keeping the ball largely in the Mineral Wells half and biding time until the end of their first contest in 19 days.
It was already an 18 day layoff when rain postponed play on Tuesday. Thanks to back-to-back draws against Bridgeport, the victory was their first win since beating Kennedale on January 29.
Stephenville is on its home pitch again Friday, facing Abilene Wylie at 6:30 p.m. The junior varsity boys match kicks off at 5 p.m.
