Tarleton sets four NCAA marks, wins 11 events

STEPHENVILLE (March 3, 2016) – Tarleton Track and Field made its outdoor debut Thursday afternoon as the host institution for the Joe Gillespie Invitational, where the Texans and TexAnns combined for 11 event victories and four NCAA provisional marks.

“It was a very good start to the season, ” said head coach Pat Ponder. “Now our goal is to get better as the season goes along.”

The day started with the field events where Tarleton set two of its marks and got first-place finishes from Rascellis Williams and William Carlton. Williams won the high jump with a leap of 6′ 6” while Carlton’s win in the pole vault was good enough for his first career NCAA provisional mark as a Texan after clearing 16′ 0”. Carlton’s season-opening jump came up 2.75” short of breaking the 11-year-old school record of 16′ 2.75” by Adam Phillips in 2005.

On the women’s side, came up just short winning three events with second-place finishes but did get an NCAA provisional mark from Hannah Patterson in the discus. Patterson, a freshman from Spearman, secured her first career mark with a throw of 134′ 3”.

From there, Tarleton headed over to Memorial Stadium for the running events for the remaining nine victories and two more national marks.

The TexAnn track and field team got victories from DeAijha Hicks-Boyce (24.52) in the 200m,Jasmine Owens (57.61) in the 400m, Haley Dennard (2:23.80) in the 800m, Aly Coughlin (17:39.59) in the 5000m, Kara Bickham (1:04.18) in the 400m Hurdles, and both the sprint and mile relay teams.

The sprint relay team of Deylinn Garrett, Ariel Ballard, Hollie Boyd, and Hicks-Boyce finished in 46.00 for their first NCAA mark of the season. In the mile relay, Ariel Ballard, Hicks-Boyce, Leslie Zupanic, and Owens won the event with a time of 3:50.06.

On the men’s side, the final two event victories came in the distance events when Chase Rathke won the 800m run with a time of 1:53.66. Peyton Heinig turned in a time of 4:04.67 in the 1500m run to earn his victory Thursday.

Tarleton track and field will return to outdoor action on March 26 at the Bobby Lane Invitational at Texas-Arlington. Before then, however, Chase Rathke and DeAijha Hicks-Boyce will compete at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Pittsburg, Kansas on March 11.
