(March 5, 2016) — Lanie Roberts is the MVP of the Class A girls state basketball tournament. She’s also a future Tarleton State TexAnn.

Roberts, who signed early with Tarleton last fall, scored a state tournament record 49 points in a semifinal contest, while the opposing team – Roby – had just 46. She scored 23 points and 13 rebounds Saturday morning to lead the Lady Indians to a 54-43 win over reigning champ Nazareth for the state title Saturday in San Antonio.

“I love her overall game. She can shoot the three, play the point and she’s really unselfish,” said Tarleton head coach Misty Wilson in a phone interview Saturday. “She’s a big guard and big guards are tough matchups so that’s what I hope she will become at this level.”

Lanie entered her senior season already a three-year all-state player after averaging 15 points as a freshman, 23 as a sophomore and 30 as a junior. Now a three-time district MVP and three-time all-tournament selection at state, she is one of the most recognized players in Lipan history.

“Anytime you are able to bring in a girl who has competed at the level Lanie has, you hope that helps them in making the transition from high school to college, because most people don’t understand how big a leap it is,” said Wilson. “When you have a girl who has been part of a state championship or even a run to the state tournament or just consistently playing at a high level against strong competition, it really helps.”

Tarleton announced the signing of Roberts and two other prep guards – Kylie Collins of Lake Ridge and Hannah Allen of Highland – on November 20, and Wilson said the following concerning the Lipan star, according to the release:

“Lanie is a local girls from Lipan that many people around here already know about. She has had…an outstanding high school career. She can score from anywhere and in any way from the floor…She will be able to help us immediately on both ends of the floor. Lanie bleeds purple and has a true passion for Tarleton and the game of basketball. We have had an opportunity to watch Lanie grow through camps and, with her being nearby, I am really excited she chose Tarleton. She is an amazing young lady and we look for her to have a great career at Tarleton.”
