(March 7, 2016) — In the rodeo world, the primary focus shifts away from the PRCA standings and rodeos that effects them only a few times each year.
The finals of The RFD-TV The American in February and the Calgary Stampede in July are examples, and the ongoing Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is another.
A bracket style rodeo complete with semifinal showdowns, a championship and even a championship shootout round, Houston is one of the favorite destinations of many professional rodeo athletes, and a few locals have already advanced from their Super Series round through to the semifinals later this month.
Like Chase Williams, a Stephenville tie-down roper who took fourth in Super Series II last weekend, earning $2,750. He needed a clutch third-place run of 9.3 seconds to earn $2,000 on his third and final head and advance.
Desdemona couple Isaac and Britany Diaz are each on to the semifinals after winning their events in Super Series I earlier last week. Isaac Diaz earned $6,250 to dominate his series in the saddle bronc riding. Sterling Smith of Stephenville is also advancing from that series, placing fourth with $2,250. Britany Diaz won Super Series I in barrel racing, earning $4,500.
Team roping has the most local ties. Super Series I was won by Stephenville header Jake Cooper and JoJo Lemond with $10,000. A tie for second and $6,000 went to Hico heeler Shay Carroll and his partner, Bubba Buckaloo, and Lipan header Chad Masters and Morgan Mill heeler Travis Graves.
Stephenville heeler Cole Davison is off to a strong start in the Super Series III team roping, winning the first round and $6,000 in 5.5 seconds Monday. Sterling Smith of Stephenville is in Series III tie-down roping and placed fourth Monday, earning $750.
Lipan heeler Patrick Smith, Stephenville header Charly Crawford and Morgan Mill heeler Dakota Kirchenschlager and the all-Stephenville duo of David Key and Travis Woodard will compete in the Super Series V team roping, along with three-time world champs Clay Tryan of Lipan and Jade Corkill of Huckabay.
The Cowboy Capital of the World will also be represented in Super Series V by four-time world champ bareback rider Bobby Mote, two-time NFR tie-down roper Marty Yates and Tarleton barrel racing star Shelby Herrman.
The semifinals are March 16 and 17, followed by a wildcard round on March 18. The championship and championship shootout are March 19.
