STEPHENVILLE (March 18, 2016) — In a pitcher’s duel generating a combined 22 strikeouts, Stephenville held off Brownwood, 2-1, stretching its program-record win streak to 10 in a district opener at McCleskey Field Friday evening.
Chyanne Ellett of Brownwood struck out 12 Honeybee batters and allowed just one hit, yet suffered the loss in the circle. Stephenville sophomore Julia Flores was virtually her equal throughout the night, fanning 10 Lady Lions and surrendering just four hits. Neither ace surrendered an earned run.
All the scoring came in the first inning, and all of it was due to errors. The only Stephenville hit was an infield single by Kali Smith to lead off the first Honeybee at bat, and two batters later, Flores drew the only walk issued by Ellett. Both came in to score on a passed ball and throwing error with Nadine Arredondo at the plate.
Brownwood had half its hits – two singles – in the top of the first, and one of them didn’t leave the infield. A throwing error by Stephenville brought in the only Lady Lion run. Victoria Sanchez and Ellett were each 2-for-3.
The Honeybees did get into a small bind when each of the first two Brownwood runners reached base in the sixth. But third baseman Arredondo fielded a one-hopper and fired to second baseman Smith, who turn and delivered to first baseman Emily Miller for a double play, then Flores recorded a strikeout to end the inning.
Stephenville breaks from district action and visits Fort Worth Country Day on Tuesday, March 22.
