STEPHENVILLE (April 1, 2016) — Head coach Rus Mayes is no April fool, and his Stephenville Honeybees weren’t fooling around with first place in 6-4A on the line at McCleskey Field Friday.

Julia Flores was dominant again in the circle and defense and bats more than backed up the sophomore hurler as the Honeybees (19-7, 3-0) flexed some muscle with a 7-1 win over district co-leader Abilene Wylie (8-5-1, 2-1).

Flores (19-7) went the distance for the 25th time in 26 starts and Stephenville won for the 18th time in 20 games, becoming the only team without a loss in 6-4A.

Mayes said on Thursday he believed his team’s lineup didn’t have an easy out one through nine, and the Honeybees went out and proved it true. Morgan Diciccio drove in two runs from the nine hole, and Sami Shaffer drove in a run and scored one from the eight spot.

Diciccio’s success brings up the dangerous top of the lineup, where leadoff hitter Kali Smith had a double and three RBIs. Julia Flores and Nadine Arredondo also drove in runs, Arredondo with a double to the fence in the bottom of the fifth when the Honeybees scored four runs to pull away.

Stephenville visits Graham at 7 p.m. Tuesday following a 5 p.m. junior varsity game.
