Thank you, neighbor!

The first week of April, Stephenville was blessed by two historic volunteer service projects.  And on behalf of the citizens of Stephenville, please allow me say THANK YOU to the thousands of Tarleton State University students and faculty who gave their time and talent this past week to serve our community.

First, Tarleton conducted the traditional “Round-up” service project the first weekend of April.  It was the 18th year for this wonderful program.  Round-up provided help at a record 155 sites and had an all-time high level of participation with more than 1,600 students, faculty, and staff volunteering.  That is a lot of weeding, repairing, and cleaning in our residential yards and help to local civic organizations!

Then on April 7th, class was cancelled so students and faculty could participate in a new service initiative called “Texans Team Up”.  On this day of service, approximately 3,000 additional students and 100 faculty gave their time and talent to 100-plus projects.  Students and faculty rolled up their sleeves and pitched-in to help Stephenville.  Activities were organized to help seniors, children, shut-ins, non-profits, parks, the library and many more locations.  It was an inspiring sight to see activity around town during the day.  I dropped by the American Legion Hall and saw a young student working next to a Vietnam veteran, painting the exterior of the building.  Lives were truly impacted with care and laughter provided by the volunteers at Foster’s Home for Children and local nursing homes, with singing and clean-up projects.

Yes, Stephenville was blessed by two special acts of kindness organized this month by Tarleton State University.  Jesus said we should, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”  The relationships built and lives impacted during these volunteer efforts certainly provide an example of this idea.  It is also a special reminder of why Stephenville is such a magnificent community.

Tarleton, thank you!

Kenny Weldon

Mayor, City of Stephenville
