DUBLIN (April 26, 2016) — Dublin has been daring and, yes, even lucky. But the Lions have also been good.

Daring like stealing home for the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Breckenridge in one district game. Lucky like scoring the winning run when Cisco airmailed a ball over the third-base dugout in another.

But also good, like Monday when the Lions shrugged off a 3-0 deficit and charged in front, 6-3, then didn’t shy away even when Cisco evened it up at 6-6, instead scoring three runs in the top of the seventh and setting down the side in order in the bottom of the inning to win the second-place playoff in 8-2A.

Above all, Dublin has been aggressive under first-year head coach Kellen Cervetto. And that aggression has led the Lions to the state playoffs for the first time in a decade and just the second time in the 20-year history of the program.

“We’re aggressive. Aggressive at the plate, on the bases, in the field and on the mound,” said Cervetto, who took over a team that didn’t win a single game last season. “I’d rather lose games being aggressive than lose them being passive, and I know there have been some games we’ve won because we were aggressive.”

The seeding playoff against Cisco seemed to be a microcosm of the season for Dublin.

“It really was the story of our season. We’ve gambled and won some of those gambles, and we’ve lost gambles, too, and that’s okay he reiterated. “We will never lose because we weren’t aggressive.”

Heston Hennings had a single, double and 3 RBI against Cisco Monday. It was Bryson Fowler who came in and struck out three straight batters to retire Cisco in order in the bottom of the seventh.

“It was a big program win,” said Cervetto. “Our program has come a long way in just one year.”

To the playoffs. With momentum on their side.

Just not for a while.

“We finished a week early in our district, so we won’t play a playoff game until (the weekend of Saturday, May 7),” said Cervetto, whose club plays Golthwaite in a playoff tuneup Friday. “We’ll do what we can to stay sharp, but I like where we’re at.”

Where only one Dublin team has gone before.
