STEPHENVILLE (April 27, 2016) — There are rewards that come with being a district champion.
Especially when your bi-district only has four teams and four qualify for the playoffs.
Stephenville (23-9) made quick work of Wichita Falls Hirschi (5-26) Wednesday evening, cruising to a 19-0 victory in five innings, just the second bi-district playoff win in program history and the first in five seasons under head coach Rus Mayes.
The Bees face Alvarado or Bridgeport in a best of three area round series, but not any time soon. Due to state mandated STAAR testing next week, the series can not begin until Friday, May 6.
Julia Flores worked four shutout innings then cheered from the dugout as Skye Gaitan saw her first action of the season and completed the shutout in the fifth.
Stephenville drew 13 walks including two on eight pitches in the first inning. The Honeybees batters were also hit by a pitch three times, and they and scored seven times on wild pitches, including two on one pitch in the fourth.
There were also hits, though, including a two-run triple by Kali Smith and an RBI double by Julia Flores in the second inning when Stephenville scored eight runs. Sami Shaffer also had a triple, bringing a run home during the three-run third. Stephenville also scored three times in the first and tacked on the final five in the fourth.
