SPECIAL TO THE FLASH

ERATH COUNTY (April 29, 2016) – Meals on Wheels of Erath County (MOWEC) will celebrate the 5th annual Shoot Down Senior Hunger event in June with a few familiar – and new – faces.

MOWEC Executive Director Whitney Lee said the event planners really took to heart the mission and message of the organization.

“We delivered more than 43,000 meals last year to homebound elderly and disabled Erath County residents,” Lee said. “But a big part of what we do is to make sure people are ok. We’re really in the business of helping families take care of each other.”

When the volunteer committee began planning for the fifth year of this event, Lee said they asked how the idea of family could be tied in.

“I love that this is happening on Father’s Day Weekend,” Lee said. “I can’t think of a better way to honor our fathers than by providing the community an opportunity to come together, have a great time and support area senior citizens all at once.”

Festivities will kick off Tuesday, June 14 at 5pm at The N at Hardway Ranch. Guests will be treated to live music featuring Texas Music artists Cody Canada and Mike McClure. Local artist and former MOWEC board member Courtney Patton will open the show.

An exclusive Meet & Greet with the artists will be held from 5:30-6:30pm. A limited number of VIP Passes are available for $100 each and include a dinner ticket. The evening will also feature dinner from Hard 8 BBQ and a live auction. Dinner tickets are available for $60 each and seating is limited.

On Saturday, June 18, the sporting clay fun shoot begins at Rough Creek Lodge. Participants will have their chance at 100 clay targets at a variety of shooting stations. Last year, participants were challenged by rabbit targets and overhead shots. Prizes for top shooters will be awarded.

Participant registration begins at 7:30am with the first flight beginning at 8 am. Registration is $100 per shooter, includes 100 clays, a raffle ticket and breakfast. This year shooters are encouraged to make this a family affair by adding a second generation shooter for $50. Duo’s could include Father/Son teams, Mother/Daughter, Grandfather/Granddaughter, etc. Participants under the age of 17 years must be accompanied by an adult. Spectators of all ages are welcome.

MOWEC is also offering sponsorship packages at many levels, starting at $150. Each sponsorship level offers special recognition during the event and the higher levels offer a chance to register up to 5 shooters, as well as a variety of extra benefits.

This year’s featured raffle has three gun combos up for grabs: an adult/youth Mossberg shotgun combo, a Windham Weaponry AR rifle and Luepold scope set, and a His & Hers 1911 pistol combo. Three winning tickets will be drawn with the first winner getting first pick of the three prizes. Each ticket is $50 or three chances for $100. Only 500 tickets are available.

Meals on Wheels has served homebound elderly and disabled Erath County residents for 21 years and has delivered nearly 750,000 meals in that time. In addition to providing home-delivered meals, MOWEC also provides transportation services and liquid nutritional supplements to qualified elderly clients. Last year, a pet food assistance program was launched to help home-bound clients. Most recently, MOWEC began working with a statewide foundation to find and serve homebound veterans, regardless of age.

Proceeds from the fun shoot will help MOWEC continue home-delivered meal services and keep elderly clients off waiting lists.
