Tarleton wins 17 medals on final day of LSC Meet

STEPHENVILLE (May 7, 2016) – Tarleton Track & Field came away with 17 medals and five first-place finishes on the final day of the Lone Star Conference Outdoor Championships at Oscar Frazier Memorial Track on Saturday.

The TexAnns finished third overall with 128 points, while the Texans ended in fifth with 100.5 points. West Texas A&M won the women’s title with 194.5 points and Texas A&M-Kingsville won the men’s trophy with 180 points.

“I’m proud of both teams,” said Tarleton head coach Pat Ponder. “They gave all they had and I can’t ask for more. I am certainly going to miss this group of seniors. They led by example all season. Now we will prepare for nationals.”

The TexAnns ended up with nine medalists on the final day of events. The women’s 4×400-meter relay of Ashley Johnson, DeAijha Hicks-Boyce, Ariel Ballard, and Jasmine Owens won the final women’s event of the weekend in thrilling fashion, topping Texas A&M-Commerce in times of 3:44.11 to 3:44.91. The TexAnns’ time is an NCAA provisional mark. The 4×100-meter relay of Deylinn Garrett, Ballard, Hicks-Boyce, and Alexondria Brooks recorded a bronze medal in a time of 46.29, an NCAA provisional time.

In the individual events, Aly Coughlin won a pair of medals on Saturday, claiming a first-place finish in the 5000-meter in a time of 18:15.41 and a second-place finish in the 1500-meter in a time of 4:48.30. Katelin Huckabee came away in third place in the 1500-meter (4:49.58). In the sprints,DeAijha Hicks-Boyce topped all runners in the 100-meter dash, running the event in 11.71. Hicks-Boyce’s 100-meter time is an NCAA automatic qualifying time and ranks first in the LSC this season. Hicks-Boyce also won a bronze medal in the 200-meter (23.97), also an NCAA provisional time.

Tarleton had a pair of TexAnns earn a pair of bronze medals in the hurdles. In the 100-meter hurdles,Deylinn Garrett finished in 14.07, an NCAA qualifying time, and Arianna Stegall ran the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.54, also an NCAA provisional time.

On the men’s side, the Texans had eight medalists and two first-place finishes, both by Chase Rathke. Rathke won the 1500-meter in 3:54.83 while teammate Dylan Willett was right behind in second place (3:55.55). The 800-meter run was a photo-finish for Rathke, who topped Luis Romero from Texas A&M-Commerce by .01 seconds (1:54.73 to 1:54.74). Willett came away in third place in the 5000-meter in 15:06.21.

Like the TexAnns, the Texans also had a pair of medalists in the hurdles. Dalton Stidham finished second in the 110-meter hurdles (14.43) and Randall Kadlacek earned a silver medal in the 400-meter hurdles (52.66). Both times for Stidham and Kadlacek are NCAA provision marks. The men’s 4×400-meter relay (Gilson Umunnakwe, Blake Eschbach, Cameron Krc, Clarencio Guerrero) placed third in a time of 3:12.38, which is an NCAA provision mark.. Rascellis Williams was the lone medalist for the Texans in the field events, tying for third place in the high jump by clearing 6′ 7.5″ (2.02m).
