(May 19, 2016) — Kirbey Kipp caught fire in round two at the Division II Women’s Golf Championship Thursday, helping to keep Tarleton State in the top half of the 12-team field.

The TexAnns are sixth of 12 teams through 36 of 72 holes. Rounds three and four are Friday and Saturday at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora, Colorado.

Kipp shot the best round of her career n round two, bouncing back from a first-hole bogey with birdies on the third and fourth, then wiping out a bogey on the fifth by birdying the 10th, and erasing a bogey at the 13th by scoring birdie on the 16th. When it was all done, Kipp had four prides, three bogeys and 11 pars for a round of 1-under par 71.

The TexAnns needed every bit of Kipp’s round. Other than a second straight even-par 72 by Isabel Jimenez-Perea, other Tarleton golfers were unable to match their round one performances. A triple bogey and four bogeys were too much for one birdie to help as Beatriz Prados shot a 6-over 78. Sarah Gee completed the team card with a 7-over 79, firing eight bogeys and a birdie. The 80 of Casey Wild, who had a triple bogey, seven bogeys and two birdies, did not count.

But thanks to Kipp’s special round, the TexAnns still improved their team score, shooting 300 after carding a 301 in the first round on Wednesday. They are the first rounds Tarleton has reached 300 strokes since March.

Rollins College (Fla.) was even par Thursday and is 2-over through two rounds, grabbing a seven stroke lead over Indianapolis and a 12-stroke advantage over Dallas Baptist. Nova Southeastern (Fla.) is fourth at +16 and St. Leo fifth at +23.

Tarleton is 25-over par, just one stroke ahead of seventh-place Findlay. Grand Valley State (Mich.), Augustana (SD) and Northeastern State (Okla.) are tied for eighth at +30. West Texas A&M is 11th at +43 and Missouri Western a distant 12th at +60.

JImenez-Perea entered the tournament ranked No. 1 in the nation individually and is part of a five-way tie for fifth at even par halfway through the championship. Hlly Leadbetter of Rollins is -3, while Marisa Toivonen of Augustana, Gabrielle Shipley of Grand Valley and Paige Lyle of Rollins are tied for second at -1. There are 13 individuals within five strokes of Leadbetter’s lead with 36 holes to play.
