STEPHENVILLE (June 2, 2016) — Head coaches of teams in a district loaded with strong young pitchers say the best in all of 6-4A this spring was Stephenville sophomore Julia Flores.

Flores was voted 6-4A Pitcher of the Year while her battery mate, freshman Jennie Winstead, was named 6-4A Catcher of the Year. The all-district softball team was released Thursday afternoon following the elimination of Brownwood in the UIL State Tournament.

Flores had a 2.064 earned run average struck out 238 batters in 196.2 innings of work, leading Stephenville to its first outright district championship in school history. The Honeybees went on to win their first area title.

Winstead was behind the plate in all 36 games, picking off six runners and catching six others stealing. She helped turn crucial double plays on a strikeout-pickoff and a strikeout-caught stealing that basically clinched an area-round sweep of Alvarado.

Rus Mayes of Stephenville was named co-coach of the year, splitting the honor with Abilene Wylie.

Earning first-team spots from Stephenville were senior second baseman Kali Smith, senior first baseman Emily Miller, junior third baseman Nadine Arredondo, junior short stop Sami Shaffer, freshman outfielder Madison Gilder and sophomore outfielder Morgan DiCiccio.

Sophomore outfielder Jessica Howell represents Stephenville on the second-team.

The Honeybees finished with a school-record 25 wins and were ranked as high as No. 7 in 4A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association, also the best in school history.
