Local rodeo stars earn big paydays at Ponoka, Greeley

(July 4, 2016) — The showdown round at the Ponoka Stampede turned into a showcase of talent from the area surrounding the Cowboy Capital of the World.

One of the most prestigious rodeos in all of Canada, the stampede brings back its highest placing average winners for a showdown round that was won by Hico heeler Shay Carroll in team roping and Stephenville native and reigning world champ Jacobs Crawley in saddle bronc riding.

Crawley pocketed $7,500 for the 87 point ride that won him the showdown ride, after placing fourth in the average – 168.5 on two – and making the money in both rounds for more than $4,000. Crawley, who now lives in Boerne, is the current world leader afte

r claiming his first world championship in the event just last year.


Carroll and his partner, header Kolton Schmidt, were awarded $3,750 each after roping head and heels in 5.3 seconds in the showdown round. They also earned almost $4,000 during the rounds and average, in which they were second with 19.6 seconds on three head.

Team ropers Luke Brown and Jake Long, representing Stephenville and Morgan Mill, respectively, had similar success at the Greeley Stampede in Greeley, Colo., where Stephenville tie-down roper Chase Williams earned his largest paycheck of 2016.

Brown and Long were eighth in the first round, second in the finals and second in the average, with 12.2 on two earning them more than $6,000. Colby Lovell and Travis Graves, both of Stephenville, split top money – more than $3,000 – with former Tarleton roper Billy Bob Brown and others in the opening round. Lovell and Graves were also sixth in the finals and sixth in the average, earning more than $5,300.

Also at Greeley, Williams tied for eighth in the first round before taking second in the finals to push himself up to third in the average at 19.9 on two. He earned almost $5,600.
