Local team ropers dominate Rooftop Rodeo

(July 12, 2016) — Cowboy Capital of the World team ropers dominated the standings and bareback rider Richie Champion also found success at the Rooftop Rodeo that wrapped up Monday in Estes Park, Colorado.

Stephenville header Luke Brown and Morgan Mill heeler Jake Long were second in 4.4 seconds, earning $3,761. They were less than the blink of an eye faster than Stephenville header Colby Lovell and Morgan Mill heeler Travis Graves, who tied for third and won $3,098 each in 4.5 seconds. Legendary Stephenville heeler Walt Woodard and header Adam Rose were fifth in 4.6 for $2,434, while world heeling leader Paul Eaves, of Huckabay, and header Clay Smith were sixth in 4.8 for $1,991.

Hico heeler Shay Carroll and header Kolton Schmidt tied with former Tarleton star Billy Bob Brown and heeler Garrett Jess for ninth in 5.3, pocketing $443 each.

Champion, a Dublin resident, scored 83 points to tie for third in the bareback riding. He won $2,918.

The latest world rankings show Brown in fourth and Lovell eighth in heading. Stephenville’s Kaleb Driggers is seventh, and if the regular season ended today, Jake Cooper of Stephenville would also be headed to the National Finals Rodeo in 13th.

Behind Eaves, other local heelers high in the world standings include Wesley Thorp of Stephenville in fifth, Long sixth and Carroll seventh. Woodard is 14th while Travis Graves is just outside the coveted top 15 at 16th in the world.
