STEPHENVILLE (July 20, 2016) – Before shoppers fight crowds to save pennies on tax-free shopping and prior to parents busting their budgets back-to-school gear, an upcoming event aims to help area families with school clothes.

Cornerstone Assembly of God will host its annual clothing exchange 8 a.m. until noon Saturday.

Church secretary Becky Ward said Cornerstone began hosting the exchange several years ago, when members of the congregation swapped clothes with each other prior to the start of the school year. About three years ago, the event was opened to – and well received by – the community as a whole about three years ago.

Now Cristi Dittfurth, wife of Pastor Ed Dittfurth, organizes the event and distributes the clothing with the assistance of church members.

The idea is to allow area families to clean out their closet and donate unneeded items for school-aged children – shoes, clothing, coats and more. Donations will be accepted through Friday and should be left at the Cornerstone Assembly office, located at 950 Glen Rose Road in Stephenville.

“We will accept anything size 4T and up to sizes that will fit teens,” Ward said.

But she explains that the word “exchange” should not deter parents, grandparents or anyone caring for school children from getting the clothing their children need.

“Everyone is welcome to come and look through and find the clothes can use,” Ward said. “The church wants to bless the community and its families by helping them get ready for the school year.”

Clothing will be distributed at the church’s youth center, which is located to the backside of the campus. To streamline the search for suitable clothing, donated items will be divided by size, with separate stacks for boys and girls.

Finally, Ward said any remaining clothing will be donated to other organizations prior to the start of the school year to ensure all donations reach those in need.
