Train derailment causes grass fire, no injuries just outside Stephenville

ERATH COUNTY (August 4, 2016) — Thirteen train cars belonging to Fort Worth & Western Railroad Company derailed just outside Stephenville along Peach Orchard Road just after 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon. There were no injuries and Hazmat was not required.

It was initially reported the derailed cars were carrying sand, but the derailment did cause a grass fire that was battled by Erath County Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Stephenville Fire Department and Harbin Volunteer Fire Department. It was under control and in mop up mode shortly after 3 p.m.

The cause of the derailment is still under investigation by Texas Department of Public Safety and the Railroad Commission, according to Texas DPS senior public information officer Dub Gillum. Erath County Sheriff’s Office also worked the scene.
