STEPHENVILLE (August 26, 2016) – This week’s Hometown Hero is Stephenville’s Chief of Police, Jason King. Stephenville residents are fortunate they can feel comfortable and safe here in our wonderful community.  The Flash and a good portion of area residents are proud of our police department and the work they do.

Great departments have great leaders.  And, this is definitely the case in Stephenville. The department is lead by Chief of Police, Jason King.

A little more about the man…

He grew up on a farm in Donna, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley (For those who may not know where that is, it is in far South Texas).  King graduated from Donna High School in 1991 and moved to Stephenville shortly afterward.  In early 1992, he started “riding along” with some of the Tarleton Police officers as they performed their duties.  He enrolled in the Tarleton State University Police Academy and graduated in the spring of 1993, going to work  for the Tarleton State University Police Department in December 1993.

In June 1997, King was hired by the Stephenville Police Department, where he put in several years before being appointed Police Chief in February 2015, when Pat Bridges was promoted to Stephenville City Administrator.

King said he has been interested in police work most of his life because there is a lot of law enforcement history in his family.  His late grandfather worked for the McAllen Police Department for 33 years and his father worked for the Edinburg Police Department, McAllen Police Department, and later retired from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department after being a game warden for well over 20 years.  King also has another relative who was a dispatcher in Corpus Christi.

He does not have typical work hours because, as chief, you never know when you’re going to be called to a scene. But, basically, King said he works Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Although, he seldom ever actually gets to leave at 5 p.m.

Despite keeping him busy, King said he loves everything about his job as chief in Stephenville and enjoys working with his terrific staff.  In addition to his duties as Chief of Police, King also serves  on the Board of the Star Council on Substance Abuse and is a Board Member of the Cross Timbers Family Services.  He is in the process of becoming a member of the Stephenville Optimist Club.

“I love everything about what I do every day and I love all the great people I get to work with here at the Police Department,” King said. “I have lived in Stephenville since 1991, and it’s been the greatest thing for me.  When I first came here, there were some families from churches and other organizations that basically adopted me and showed me what a great community this was and it still is today.”

A great big THANK YOU to Police Chief King and the rest of the Stephenville Police Department for helping to ensure Stephenville remains the great place that it is to live and raise a family.
