STEPHENVILLE (September 8, 2016) — Two familiar faces will be serving Tarleton women’s basketball as assistant coaches in the upcoming 2016-17 season.

Karli Moore, a four-year letter winner with the TexAnns and a graduate assistant last season, has been promoted to take the place of Chris Marks, who leaves Tarleton after two seasons.

“Karli is a good fit just because of the type of leader she was as a player here, and you could really see a shift with her last year going from playing to coaching even as young as she is,” said Tarleton head coach Misty Wilson, who is entering her third season in charge after playing for Tarleton then serving as assistant under Tarleton Hall of Fame member Ronnie Hearne. “Karli has a bright basketball mind and leadership skills that set her apart from others.”

Moore was a senior in 2014-15, the first season with Wilson as head coach. The TexAnns went 17-10, then she helped them to a 17-11 record as a graduate assistant in 2015-16. As a player she was honored three times on the Lone Star Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll and made the LSC All-Academic Team in 2015. She averaged 4.9 points and 2.8 rebounds during her career.

“When I decided I wanted to be a coach I knew immediately that I wanted it to be at Tarleton because the program, the university and the community have been so great to me and have become such influential parts of my life,” said Moore. “Coach Wilson is such a big time role model, and she did the same thing I’m doing, going from player to assistant coach, so just continuing to work with her is a huge blessing in itself.”

Moore, 24, says her experience at Tarleton offsets her young age as she begins the new role.

“I am very young, but I also have spent five years here at Tarleton and I know how Coach Wilson wants it to be run and the type of recruits she looks for,” Moore explained. “I believe that familiarity with the program compensates for me being so young.”

That’s exactly what Wilson is banking on.

“Karli is young, but she is doing the same thing I did at her age,” Wilson explained. “She is actually probably a lot further along as far as her coaching development because the program is so much more stable than it was 13 years ago when Coach Hearne was just coming in and I was transitioning to coaching after being a player.

“The girls who are still on the team who played with Karli are older now, so we already look at them as leaders, and they understand the shift of looking at Karli as a coach and not just a teammate and friend,” Wilson added. “I think everyone will handle it well and Karli will do a great job.”

Moore earned her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology in 2016 and is currently pursuing her master’s.

Jake Stevens also been promoted to serve as an assistant coach after two seasons as a graduate assistant. He graduated from Tarleton in 2011 with a bachelor’s in kinesiology with emphasis on fitness management and is now working on a master’s in kinesiology. Before returning to Tarleton in 2014-15, Stevens was a high school assistant at Cherokee and Westwood.
