STEPHENVILLE (October 4, 2016) — It was more of a struggle than many may have expected considering the way Stephenville dominated Waxahachie Life on the road earlier in 8-4A play.
But the rematch at Gandy Gym Tuesday evening was anything except another easy district stroll, at last for two sets. Stephenville won, 25-20, 25-22, 25-20, and stays alone in second in the district. The Bees conclude a three-match homestand against Godley at 5 p.m. Friday.
The Honeybees trailed 13-12 in the first set and 22-21 in the second.
The first set come back featured aced serves – two each by Taylor Garber and Nicona Stilwell. In the second set, the Bees scored back-to-back for a 23-22 advantage before Life called timeout only to commit an error then see Stephenville sophomore Chloe Goodman land the winning kill shot.
They overcame the second-set deficit with back-to-back points to force a timeout by Life, before Hailey Martin continued her serve that began just before the break and finished off the break by serving up points on a Life error then a Chloe Goodman kill.
The third set was less intense thanks to a 5-0 start by Stephenville. It was 13-5 after another pair of Stilwell aces. The Honeybees had a handful of errors down the stretch that helped makes Life make the third respectable, but it was never truly close.
Stilwell had 12 kills, five aces and two blocks, and Garber racked up 25 assists, seven kills, three aces, three digs and a block. Goodman added 10 kills, Hanah Huckabee had nine assists and Hailey Martin contributed 19 digs.
