Spirits of Erath come to life during cemetery walk

ERATH COUNTY (October 22, 2016) – Erath County has a colorful history that was painted by equally colorful characters. And, an annual tradition of honoring their memories and learning more about their lives and times is set for Sunday, October 30.

The Ninth Annual Spirits of Erath Cemetery Walk is hosted by Friends of (Tarleton State University’s) Dick Smith Library and Stephenville Historical House Museum. It’s presented in celebration of the Day of the Dead and invites history lovers and the curious to stroll through West End Cemetery as tales of some county’s historical figures unfold. 

Experiences of Dr. W.W. McNeill, Pheobe Haws, Viola Moore, Ita Elize Berekman, Pearl Wylie Cage, Fred Chandler and Randolph Clark will be presented through short skits during designated stops along the cemetery walk.

Local actors, Linda Brown, Doug Burns, Lori LaRue, Nathan LaRue, Robin Ritchie, Ed Tober, and Sheran Weible will re-enact the past in period costumes provided by Tarleton Theatre.

Attendees will have the option of two start times, 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., and tickets are $5 per person will proceeds benefiting the host organizations.

Organizers encourage those in attendance to wear comfortable shoes, hats and sunscreen. Folding chairs may be brought, but must be moved from station to station. Water will be provided, but there are no restrooms at the cemetery.

Parking is available across from the cemetery on Lillian Street, as well at the south and west sides of the cemetery, using the Swan Street entrance.

In the event of inclement weather, the cemetery walk will be postponed until the upcoming spring.
