STEPHENVILLE – In addition to enjoying a career year on the gridiron, Cody Burtscher has earned another academic accolade to add to his resume after the senior linebacker was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team Thursday morning.

Burtscher is one of three linebackers in the region to make the CoSIDA All-District team, which is voted on by Sports Information Directors from around the country. The recipients of the all-district honors will be voted on for CoSIDA’s Academic All-America team in the coming weeks.

The senior linebacker, who is in his second season on defense after spending two years as a running back for the Texans, leads the team and the Lone Star Conference with 99 total tackles. He has also made 6.0 tackles for a loss and 4.5 sacks. He has five quarterback hurries and five defensive takeaways – two fumble recoveries and a career high three interceptions. He was also named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week on September 19 after his efforts in a 35-5 win against Angelo State.

His list of accomplishments is not limited to the field, however.

Burtscher, a native of Glen Rose, boasts a 3.93 grade point average as a Bio-Medical Science major at Tarleton. He is a six-time member of the dean’s list, a three-time Tarleton Chemistry Student of the Year, a three-time Lone Star Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection, and a two-time Academic All-LSC student-athlete. He was also recently named one of 156 national semifinalists from all levels of collegiate football for the National Football Foundation’s William V. Campbell Trophy.

Burtscher and the Texans are currently preparing for their final two games of the season, in which Tarleton is in control of its own destiny for a share of the Lone Star Conference Championship. Tarleton will host No. 12 Midwestern State Saturday at 7 p.m. in Stephenville.
