Stephenville – Services for Melvin Calhoun, 85, a retired plant supervisor for Lone Star Gas, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 3, 2016 at Green’s Creek Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Hannah officiating and Rev. Dale Cartwright assisting. Burial will follow at De Leon Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at Lacy Funeral Home.

Melvin was born in Morris, Oklahoma on March 13, 1931 to J.W. and Bessie Calhoun. He married Winnie Bryce on June 3, 1950. She preceded him in death on February 10, 2008. He then married Joy (Riherd) Boening on May 2, 2009, in Dublin, Texas.

He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Stephenville. He also fellowshipped at Green’s Creek Methodist Church in Dublin and was a deacon at Gordon Baptist Church in Gordon.

In addition to working at Lone Star Gas, he was a small engine repairman, handyman, employee at Lacy Funeral Home for many years, and was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department in Snyder, De Leon, and Gordon. He served as a fire chief in De Leon as well. He was also a former member of the Gordon Lions Club.

Some of his most cherished hobbies included gardening, sharing his produce, and collecting clocks. He also loved the Texas Rangers and the Cowboys.

Survivors include his wife, Joy Calhoun of Stephenville, Texas; children, Elizabeth Ann Callison and husband, Lannes of De Leon, Texas, Melody Dawn Reed and husband, Rod of Rowena, Texas, Bobbie Nichols and husband, Keith of Buff Dale, Texas, Steven Pepper of Dublin, Texas, Ernest Boening of Stephenville, Texas; grandchildren, Laramie Callison and wife, Stephanie of De Leon, Texas, Morgan Reed of Rowena, Texas, Emily Boening of Stephenville, Texas; great-grandchildren, Makenna Callison and Lander Callison; as well as many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his faithful companion, Balto. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, J.W. and Bessie Calhoun, his wife, Winnie Calhoun, five brothers, and three sisters.
