STEPHENVILLE (November 6, 2016) — No. 10 Tarleton State appeared far from polished while controlling its exhibition against Southwestern Christian Sunday afternoon at Wisdom Gym.

Of course, no team looks polished on November 6.

Heralded redshirt freshman Josh Hawley scored 19 points off the bench and Romond Jenkins collected 11 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double as the Texans built a 30-point lead and won 77-49.

The atmosphere was laid back Sunday afternoon, but the intensity will be turned up several notches next weekend for the Texan Tipoff Classic. Tarleton opens its season against Adams State (Colo.) on Friday, then faces Colorado-Colorado Springs Saturday. Both count as South Central Region games, and both tip off at 7 p.m.

Tarleton shot 44 percent from the floor and just 38 percent from the arc, but was an impressive 16-19, 84 percent, from the foul line. Southwestern Christian shot just 34 percent and the Texans out-rebounded the Eagles, 46-33.

Tarleton led 46-21 at intermission after taking control with the game’s first seven points. Hawley had 10 points in nine minutes before the break, and Jenkins scored nine points and grabbed seven boards in just seven first-half minutes.

Denzel Smith and Anthony Davis each scored seven for Tarleton, while Chantz Chambers and Ridell Camidge each added six.

Southwestern Christian, of the NAIA’s Sooner Athletic Conference and out of Bethany, Oklahoma, shot just 28 percent from the field in the first half, but did hit 40 percent after intermission. The Eagles were led by Shawn Scott with 10 points and six boards, while Marvin White and Trevar Mayon each scored nine.
