STEPHENVILLE (November 11, 2016) — Four players scored in double figures and Romond Jenkins posted a strong double-double as No. 10 Tarleton State routed Adams State (Colo.), 89-59 in the Whataburger Tipoff Classic at Wisdom Gym Friday.
Jenkins scored 15 points and grabbed 15 rebounds while while Ridell Camidge led Tarleton with 16 points, Chantz Chambers had 15 including 10 in the opening moments and Deshawn Riddick netted 13 along with four assists.
It was the balanced scoring Lonn Reisman, the winningest active college coach at any level in Texas with now 614 victories, was looking for from his team.
“We moved the ball well and got everyone involved and I think when we do that we will prove to be a tough team to defend,” said Reisman. “We were able to get a lot of players involved, and I don’t just mean get them on the floor, but involved in the flow of the game and contributing to what we are doing.”
Tarleton showed that depth with 11 different players scoring points. They were especially dominant in the paint with 48 points down low to 12 for Adams State, a 45-37 rebounding advantage and five blocked shots. The Texans shot 51 percent form the floor but went just 28 percent from the arc, struggling from the same spot they did for the first half of last season.
“I thought we took some good shots out there and I trust that those will start to go down,” said Reisman, who has guided his last two Tarleton teams to regional championships. “We have too many good shooters on this team for that to continue. As the season goes on, I think that will prove to be a strength.”
Tarleton dealt 16 assists, which pleased Reisman, and turned the ball over only 11 times. One of those was voluntary as the Texans took a shot clock violation with time running down in the one-sided victory. They will look for another strong showing when they conclude the classic against UC-Colorado Springs at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Adams State was led by Jarrett Givens with 15 points and eight rebounds. Brandon Pasker had eight points and eight boards while Bryan Umoru and Jakolbhi Gillette also scored eight.
