STEPHENVILLE (November 15, 2016) — Stephenville overcame a slow start and controlled the second half to earn a tough 50-42 victory over Granbury Tuesday evening at Gandy Gym.

Hailey Martin scored 12 points and was joined in double figures by Payton Wall and Tess Baker with 10 each while Ebony Green had nine for Stephenville, which outscored Granbury by 13 after trailing by five in the opening minutes.

Both teams pressured and caused turnovers, but Stephenville was able to do it four full quarters and Granbury only until halftime. The Bees went into a stall the last couple minutes and a fatigued Granbury team couldn’t catch up to the ball to apply pressure or stop the clock with a foul.

The Honeybees led by as many as 12 with two minutes remaining, and Granbury didn’t have enough possessions to get back into it. The Lady Pirates did close the gap to eight and got a steal before immediately calling a timeout. But Stephenville rebounded a missed shot with 14 seconds left and after calling its last timeout was able to run out the clock.

The Honeybees were slow out the gate, trailing 8-3 in the opening minutes before its pressure defense generated easy opportunities on the offensive end for a 9-8 lead on a layup by Wall. Granbury jumped right back in front, 10-9 at the end of the first.

Martin hit a 3-pointer to give Stephenville a 12-10 lead early in the second. Shots from the arc continued to highlight that period as Jordan Carter hit two, including one from the left corner to break a tie and give the Bees a 23-20 edge at the half.

Carter finished with eight points. Katie Roberson added six and Jayci Morton five.

Granbury was paced by Gabbie Nunn, who led all scorers with 16. Amber Strange added 10.
