(November 22, 2016) — Stephenville left home for the first time and is coming back with its first win.

The Yellow Jackets (1-2) dominated Springtown throughout the non-district battle, winning 75-55 behind 20 points from Coby Vandenberg and a 27-38 performance at the free-throw line, where they outscored the host Porcupines by 22 points.

Vandenberg was 9-12 shooting in the paint, made each of his two foul shots and grabbed nine rebounds, just missing on a double-double. He even swiped two steals to round out an impressive stat line.

Easton Jones scored 12 points, Mason Holstein 11 and Blake Aragon 10 to round out the balanced scoring performance by Stephenville.

The Jackets built a 29-19 cushion by halftime and stretched it to 53-36 by the end of the third. They shot a healthy 45 percent from the floor, and the 71 percent mark from the line was enough to overcome going just 2-10 from outside the arc.

Springtown shot just 35 percent and 26 of its 57 shot attempts were 3-point efforts, but they made just nine from downtown, outscoring the Jackets 27-6 from there.

Stephenville countered by controlling the interior, posting a 36-27 rebounding advantage that led to a 19-10 edge in second-chance points. Turnovers were also a big story as the Jackets took the ball away a whopping 31 times while giving it away on 25 trips. They outscored Springtown 22-13 off turnovers.

Clay Krause scored seven and Cole Pettit five for Stephenville. Cameron Frazier netted four, Will Beaty three, Kai Williams two and Merit Holstein one.

Stephenville is off for Thanksgiving and hosts Dublin at 8 p.m. next Tuesday in Gandy Gym.
