Local athletes contending for world titles in Round 10

Those local cowboys are part of tight world championship races that have come down to the final night of the 2016 PRCA rodeo season. Round 10, which can be seen on CBS Sports Network at 9 p.m. (CST) Saturday, will feature Stephenville cowboys Brown and Yates trying to capture their first world titles and Crawley, a Stephenville High School graduate and local business owner currently residing in Boerne, is trying to repeat.

Brown, a header, and Long, a heeler from Morgan Mill, remain first in the world despite no time in Round 9 Friday. They maintain narrow leads in the world standings are fifth in the average. Stephenville header Kaleb Driggers and Burleson heeler Junior Nogueira are second in the world and sixth in the average.

Crawley is first in the world by more than $40,000 over Ryder Wright, who has won five rounds but is not in the average. Crawley is just one point out of the lead in the average and CoBurn Bradshaw, who is third in the world more than $50,000 behind Crawley, enters Round 10 splitting fourth and fifth in the average.

Yates, who split top money in Round 9 tie-down roping with friend Ryan Jarrett, is second in the world and less than $1,400 behind leader Marcos Costa of Childress. Yates, who has made the money in six rounds but no-timed in the remaining three, will not get any help from the average pay out. But another electrifying run by the 22-year old Huckabay High School graduate in Round 10 would put him in the lead and leave officials scrambling to add the average pay outs to determine a world champion.

The biggest local winner in Round 9 was Stephenville heeler Shay Carroll, who partnered with header Kolton Schmidt to win the team roping in a white-hot 3.6 seconds. Driggers and Nogueira were second in 3.8, and Lipan heeler Paul Eaves came in fifth in 5.0 with header Clay Smith.

Sterling Crawley continued his strong NFR performance by taking third in the Round 9 saddle bronc riding with 82 points. He has made the money in four rounds in his second finals appearance.
