(December 11, 2016) — Saturday night didn’t go the way of the four local cowboys who entered Round 10 of the National Finals Rodeo in contention for world championships, but five local team ropers did break through for nice paydays in the final go-round of the 2016 PRCA season.

Wesley Thorp concluded his impressive year of roping by splitting top money. A Stephenville heeler who already won the College National Finals Rodeo as a Ranger College team roper, Thorp and partner Zac Small roped head and heels in 4.3 seconds, earning $23,481 each.

Stephenville header Colby Lovell and Morgan Mill heeler Travis Graves struggled in the NFR, but finished with a nice payday thanks to a 4.5 second run that took third in the go-round for $15,654 each.

Another Morgan Mill heeler, Dakota Kirchenschlager, partnered with head Tyler Wade to place fourth in 4.7 seconds, good for an $11,000 check. It was the duo’s fourth check at the NFR totaling about $37,000 in the rounds.

Stephenville header Kaleb Driggers and partner Junior Nogueira of Burleson jumped to second in the final world standings afar a sixth-place performance in Round 10. They moved up to second in the world in the final heading and heeling standings, and the money, along with their fourth-place average payout, was enough to make Nogueira the 2016 All-Around Cowboy.

The rest of Round 10 was a disappointment for the local delegation as Stephenville header Luke Brown and Morgan Mill heeler Jake Long missed to relinquish their lead in the world standings, where they they finished third after a sixth-place pay out in the average.

Jacobs Crawley was called for a foul coming out the chute or he would have repeated as world champion in saddle bronc riding. Crawley had an up-and-down NFR, making the money six times with two no-scores thrown in to leave him splitting fifth and sixth in the average and second in the world, just more than $2,800 from repeating.

Marty Yates also missed in Round 10, ending his attempt to win the world title with no help in the average. Yates placed in six rounds and won almost $120,000 without including the $10,000 NFR qualifier’s bonus.
