VENUS (January 3, 2017) — It was anything but pretty, but No. 11 Stephenville overcame 21 turnovers to knock off Venus, 50-41, in an 8-4A girls district contest Tuesday evening.
Junior point guard Jordan Carter led Stephenville with 15 points and the Bees survived 17 by Brooke Habeck.
Stephenville trailed 15-13 until getting hot from the arc during a 8-2 burst. Jordan Carter hit one of her four 3-pointers to give Stephenville the lead for good, then stole the ball and passed ahead to her little sister, Madison Carter, for a transition layup that forced a Venus timeout. Big sis struck again out of the break, as Jordan knocked down another 3 and it was 21-15 Stephenville 3:15 before the intermission.
It was 5-17 at the half, but Venus began the third quarter scoring with a four-point play, hitting a 3 with a foul and converting the ensuing free throw to cut it to 25-21.
Stephenville scored the next three from the foul stripe, then Blair Landes and Jordan Carter buried back-to-back triples to make it 34-21 with three minutes left in the third.
Venus could get no closer than 35-28 down the stretch, and Stephenville ultimately gained its biggest lead on a short transition jumper by Payton Wall that made it 48-34 with 1:58 remaining.
Jayci Morton scored nine for Stephenville, Wall and Liz Pack each added six, Landes and Hailey Martin each netted five and Madison Carter and Tesslie Baker both contributed two.
Stephenville hosts Midlothian Heritage at 6:15 p.m. Friday at Gandy Gym.
