Huckabay earns leg up in district title race with win at Lipan

(January 11, 2017) — Huckabay has celebrated two tournament championships and a number of other impressive victories this season.

But Tuesday was the biggest win to this point for the No. 4 Lady Indians, as they earned a leg up in the 18-A district championship race with a 40-35 road victory over defending state champ and No. 22 Lipan.

The Lady Indians survived a grueling second half full of offensive struggles, making just enough free throws in the fourth quarter to survive. All eight of their court-quarter points came from the foul stripe, with Presli Bray and Kailin Dowell each scoring all their points int he second half to combine for 14 of the team’s 17 following intermission.

Ciara Philips carried the Lady Indians in the first half with 10 of the team’s 23 before the break. She finished with a team-leading 11.

Trinity Meador scored six, Brenna Yarbrough four, Emmy Rodriguez three and Tiffany Lopez two.

The Lady Indians were 8-14 from the foul stripe in the fourth with Lipan surging ever closer. It was 38-35 before Meador blocked a shot and got the ball to Bray, who was fouled and hit both to seal the victory.

Huckabay hosts Lingleville on Friday, girls at 6:30 p.m. and boys about 8 p.m.
