STEPHENVILLE (January 11, 2017) — Stephenville senior outfielder Seth Heupel signed a letter of commitment Wednesday to continue his baseball career at Wayland Baptist University.

“When I visited (Wayland Baptist), it just felt like home,” said Heupel. “The religion side of it was important to me. It feels like a place where I can grow and nurture my faith while playing baseball.”

Heupel celebrated his commitment to the NAIA school in Plainview with his family, teammates and coaches in the foyer at SHS.

“This is great, it’s like all the hard work I’ve put in has paid off,” said Heupel following the signing. “I’ve been playing baseball since I was a little kid and I’ve always dreamed of playing in college, so it feels great.”

Seth is the son of Nick and Jill Heupel. His father’s name still dots the baseball record book at Tarleton State University, where he played in the early 1990s under late Hall of Fame coach Jack Allen.

Seth Heupel is one of three first-team all-district players returning for the Yellow Jackets, who tied for second in 6-4A last season before winning a bi-district series and ultimately being eliminated in three tight games by Dacatur in the area round of the Region I-4A playoffs.

“I just want to finish strong,” Heupel said of his upcoming senior season with the Jackets. “That’s kind of our motto is to finish strong, so that’s what I want to do in my last year here.”

Wayland Baptist is 633-563-3 under 22nd year head coach Brad Bass, and is tied for No. 20 in the NAIA preseason coaches poll. The Pioneers enjoyed a school-record 45 wins last season, when they were third in the Sooner Athletic Conference and second in the conference tournament before reaching the NAIA National Championships for the second time in school history.
