STEPHENVILLE (January 11, 2017) — Four days after the nation swears in its 45th president, two Tarleton State University history professors and Star-Telegram columnist Bud Kennedy take a historical look at the 2016 election and analyze its impact on North Texas.
Tarleton President F. Dominic Dottavio kicks off the event set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, in Fort Worth Central Library’s Tandy Lecture Hall, 500 W. Third St. There is no charge.
Kennedy will analyze the role of the media in the 2016 presidential campaign, and Tarleton’s assistant professor of history Dr. Chris Hickman will compare the recent election cycle to the tumultuous and critical 1968 contest between Republican candidate Richard Nixon and Hubert Humphrey, a Democrat from Minnesota.
Tarleton assistant professor of history Dr. Michael Landis will discuss parallels between the 2016 campaign and those of 1824—the only election in U.S. history to be decided by the House of Representatives after neither candidate secured a majority of the electoral college vote—and 1828, a rematch of the previous contest. John Quincy Adams was named president in 1824, but Andrew Jackson easily won the following election.
