STEPHENVILLE (January 16, 2017) — Don’t be surprised if 3-point attempts are flying from all angles Thursday when No. 13 Tarleton State (15-2) welcomes No. 15 West Texas A&M (18-2) to Wisdom Gym.

Because while Tarleton’s attempts from the arc are trending slightly upward from a season ago, West Texas A&M leads the league in 3-point tries by a wide margin.

Tarleton has improved its 3-point shooting by a significant 7.2 percent compared to this point of last season. The Texans are hitting .376 from the arc this year. Through 17 gamers last year, Tarleton was shooting just .304 3-point land.

West Texas A&M is shooting just .338 from the arc, but that hasn’t slowed the Buffaloes down from firing 3-point tries. The Buffs competed in an early exempt tournament and have competed in two more games than any other team in the LSC, but just two games doesn’t account for 119 more 3-point tries than anyone else.

The Buffaloes have attempted 565 3-pointers on the year, or 28.3 per game. UT-Permian Basin is second in the LSC in attempts at 26.2, and Cameron is third at 24.8.

Tarleton is fourth in the league in 3-point tries per game. WTAMU is making 9.6 of 28.3 from downtown, while Tarleton is 8.6 of 23 attempts on average. The Texans are 147-391 overall.

Tarleton was 108-355, or .304, from the arc through 17 games last season. That’s 6.4 3-pointers on 20.9 attempts. WTAMU attempted 27.4 3-pointers on average last season, making 9.8 for a percentage of .360.

Individually, only Quay King of Angelo State shoots the 3 more accurately than Tarleton guard Ridell Camidge, who on Tuesday was named LSC Offensive Player of the Week, is 55-133, or .414, while King hits .420. WT has two in the top 10 of the conference – Jordan Evans is sixth at at .370 and David Chavlovich eighth at .331.

Chavlovich leads the league in total attempts and makes from the arc with 166 total, or 8.7 per game. King of ASU actually shoots them more frequently though, hoisting 10.1 tries on average and making 4.2. For Tarleton, Camidge tries 7.8 and knocks down 3.2 of them.

The 3-pointers likely won’t slow much once WTAMU leaving Stephenville and UT-Permian Basin pulling in. Falcon guards James McPherson and Johnnie Lacy are third and fourth in the LSC in 3-point makes per game – combined 5.9 – and are third and ninth in percentage. As a team, UTPB is 151-420, or .360 from the arc.The Falcons are 9.4 of 26.3 per game from the arc.

Tarleton isn’t likely to reduce its shooting from outside after season highs for 3-point attempts and makes just last Tuesday. The Texans were 14-30, or 46.7 percent, in a 81-63 win over Texas A&M-Commerce at Wisdom Gym. The intensity was much different in a 111-63 non-conference rout of Arlington Baptist College on Saturday, but the Texans were still 10-30.

The math should all add up to a bunch of 3-pointers flying at Wisdom Gym this weekend – 100 of them, to be exact, if each team attempts exactly its average to this point of the season.
