(February 9, 2010) — Randy Thornton, head football coach and athletic director at Santo, is the lone finalist for the same position at Hico, according to Matt Stepp of TexasFootball.com and multiple other sources.

Thornton spent 10 seasons guiding Santo on four playoff trips including a run to the 2014 2A Division II quarterfinals.

“I don’t have a comment at this time,” said Thornton when asked about the position Thursday, though sources say he informed his student-athletes earlier Thursday that he would be leaving.

Hico superintendent Jon Hartgraves also declined to comment right away.

“I will be making a formal announcement soon, but not quite yet,” said Hartgraves.

Thornton, a Stephenville alumnus and member of the 1993 and 1994 Yellow Jacket state championship teams, was selected out of a pool of 154 applicants.

Pending approval of the HISD school trustees at their February 20 meeting, Thornton will replace Keith Wood, who led the program for nine years, winning three district titles and reaching the 2A Division I semifinals and quarterfinals over the last five seasons. Wood spent 21 total seasons at Hico, the previous 12 as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator.
