Austin (February 12, 2017) – Texas Legal Services Center (www.tlsc.org), Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas (www.lanwt.org), and the Stephenville Public Library (www.stephenvilletx.gov/city-services/library) have teamed up to deliver the “Rural Clinics Pilot Project”
Thanks to funding from the Texas Bar Foundation, a pilot project has been launched to help residents in rural Texas get free legal assistance.
Through the project, Stephenville residents will be able to get free, face-to-face legal advice from a licensed attorney over video chat on the Internet. Eligible residents will be given advice on a variety of civil legal matters including but not limited to divorce, custody, child support, eviction, foreclosure and debt collection.
Due to the cost of obtaining legal help or the lack of resources experienced by civil legal service providers, unfortunately, not all Texans are able to get legal advice. In fact, there is only one legal aid lawyer for every 9,800 Texans who qualify for services. Those who live in rural Texas face additional hardship in finding legal advice or representation.
To participate, Stephenville residents must call 817-339-5320 to make an appointment for the free 30-minute video chat, which will be held on Monday, February 13, between 1 and 4 p.m. at the Stephenville Public Library.
On the appointment day, those who have preregistered should go to the library at the specified time, where a librarian will direct the person to a computer station and help start the video conference. When the video conference starts, the resident and the licensed attorney will have a face-to-face video chat about the person’s legal issue. Scanners and printers will be available to assist with the advice session.
Appointments are limited, so interested residents should call soon to reserve their spot.
